Did you know your driver’s license photo could be in a federal database right now? Apparently, a lot of other people, including lawmakers, had no idea either.
It turns out federal agencies have been collecting that information to create a facial recognition database. And even in an age of selfies and social media, that has some groups questioning whether the program is violating people’s civil rights.
“I feel violated,” said Boss Rhoden, who’d just gotten a new license in St. Petersburg. “You know, you’re here for one reason. And then somebody is taking that information and putting it somewhere else. Or expanding on that information.”
As people lined up to get their pictures taken this week, few, if any of them, knew their photo would likely end up part of a federal database.
And given the option?
“I would have said no,” said Diane Rhoden.
The revelation, uncovered by researchers at Georgetown University, has taken lawmakers by surprise. Some say they never consented to the program. And there was no permission from the drivers themselves.
Yet agencies like the FBI and ICE have been collecting millions of images from driver’s license databases around the country, quietly storing them for a facial recognition database.
“I never gave them permission to do that,” said Stephen Kerekes, picking up his new license. “And honestly, I would oppose it. Because it seems like it would be against our rights.”
